Enamel signs
Vitreous enamel signs are made by fusing glass powder onto steel, which is why old signs keep bright colours for decades. Chips usually show as dark steel spots, often around the mounting holes and edges. A few chips are normal on an old sign; heavy rust or repainting lowers appeal. Many brands have been reissued, so check the era field.
Condition and use
Industrial pieces are often sold with the marks of their working life: scuffs, paint loss, surface rust and old repairs. "Fair condition" can mean parts are missing. Old electrical items such as fans, lamps and coffee machines should be checked by an electrician before use. Heavy pieces list weight or dimensions; plan how they will be carried in.
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell an original enamel sign from a reproduction?
Original vitreous enamel signs are heavy, made from steel with several fired layers of glass, and often show chips revealing dark metal, especially around holes and edges. Reproductions are frequently lighter, printed on thin tin or aluminium, or have a very even, glossy finish without wear. The era stated in the listing and the photos of the back and edges help you judge.
What makes furniture "industrial"?
Industrial furniture was originally made for factories, workshops, offices, schools or railways, rather than homes. It is typically built from steel, cast iron and solid wood, designed for strength and function, with features like adjustable heights and screw mechanisms. Today it is popular in homes for its sturdy build and honest, practical look, including patina from use.
Should I remove rust from vintage industrial pieces?
Light surface rust can be removed with fine wire wool and a little oil, then sealed with wax or a clear matt lacquer to stop it returning while keeping the patina. Heavy rust that affects strength should be looked at by a metalworker. Avoid sanding off original paint or lettering, which is often part of the object's appeal.
