What you will find
Advertising posters (Campari, Perrier and tobacco brands, including work by Leonetto Cappiello and Raymond Savignac), museum and exhibition posters for artists such as Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso, licensed prints after Warhol, Rothko and Keith Haring, contemporary prints by Shepard Fairey (OBEY), film posters and ceramic tile panels. Most pieces here are between EUR 300 and EUR 400.
How posters are graded
Condition uses a letter scale common in the poster trade:
- A: excellent, near mint.
- A-: fine, with only tiny imperfections.
- B+: good, with small imperfections such as light creases or edge wear.
- B: reasonable, with obvious imperfections such as tears, folds or staining.
Original, reprint or licensed print?
An original poster was printed at the time for its purpose, such as an exhibition or advertising campaign. A later printing or reissue reproduces the design afterwards. "After" an artist, or a licensed print, means a reproduction of the artist's work made with permission, not a hand-signed print by the artist. The era field and printing method (offset lithograph, stone lithograph, giclée) help place each piece.
Framing and care
Check height and width, given in centimetres, before choosing a frame. Use acid-free mounts and UV-filtering glass or acrylic to slow fading, and hang posters away from direct sunlight and damp walls. Unframed posters are best stored flat.
Frequently asked questions
What do poster condition grades A, A- and B+ mean?
They are a standard scale in the poster trade. A means excellent, close to mint. A- means fine with only tiny imperfections. B+ is good with small flaws such as light creases, small edge tears or minor wear. B is reasonable, with obvious imperfections like folds, tears or stains. Grades refer to the paper itself, not to any frame.
What is the difference between an offset lithograph and a giclée?
An offset lithograph is printed on a press, with ink transferred from a plate to a rubber blanket and then to paper; most 20th-century posters were made this way. A giclée is a high-resolution inkjet print made digitally, often on archival paper. Both can be licensed reproductions; neither is an original artwork in itself.
Who was Leonetto Cappiello?
Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) was an Italian-born poster artist working in Paris, often called the father of modern advertising posters. He replaced detailed scenes with a single bold figure on a dark background, easy to read from a distance. His designs for Campari, Cinzano and many other brands are still reprinted and widely collected.
