A George I silver tankard, possibly by John Penfold. Having a hinged cover of threaded and shaped form, with a scroll thumbpiece, the body with slighly tapering sides, a girdle, and raised on a slightly spreading foot, a scroll handle is fitted to one side and is engraved 'S I M', with a star at the bottom of the handle, hallmarked to the lid and base, London 1721; height 16cm, cup diameter 10cm, gross weight 20.53ozt. The tankard is in good condition. The maker's mark on the body is partially obscured, but the rest are clear and easily readable. There is some play in the hinge. It opens and closes well; it just has a slight wobble from side to side. The cover sits well, and the maker's mark on the interior of the lid is clear. The handle is good and strong, also being marked by the maker halfway down its length; this is worn. The entirety has light scratches, tarnishing and nicks that are commensurate with age and use. Additionally, there are three minor dents to the top of the lid (images have been added for assessment). There is also a small indentation to the rim of the foot; however, this does not affect the balance of the item, nor is it very visible to the naked eye.
