AN AFSHAR 'STAR' SINGLE BAG, SOUTH PERSIA, LATE 19TH CENTURY “The main design feature is a central irregular star framed by a double row of small white crosses on a dark blue ground. The border is formed of triangles pointing inwards and outwards in an alternating pattern. Guards are in an alternating blue and white-banded pattern. Slit panels are in chevron pattern twill, two colours, different in each panel. A guard is in a similar weave. The top on both sides is decorated in brown and apricot weft twining. The kelim ends are folded over and hemmed. The sides are overcast in a V shaped plaited pattern in various colours. The knotting is symmetrical with warps in natural ivory wool and wefts in brown wool. The back of bag is mainly in horizontal bands of kelim weave in red, ivory and dark green. Two rows of alternating green and apricot weft twining with plaited loops lie opposite the slits on the front of the bag.” (Benjamin, op.cit., Condition Report: LITERATURE: 3rd ed., 2004, pp. 60-61 “Complete small bag of an Afshar tribal type.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 60)
