AN AFSHAR 'SHIELD' RUG, SOUTH PERSIA, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY LITERATURE: Benjamin, Paul, South Persian Rugs, Bags and Saddle Covers: from the collection of Paul R Benjamin, 3rd ed., 2004, pp. 14-15 "Related shield designs occur in Caucasian/Azerbaijan rugs. This type of Afshar shield design occurs in smaller format rugs (Opie, J. (1992) Tribal Rugs , Laurence King Publishing, plate 12.15) and in bag faces ( Hali, issue 69, page 121, 1993). It is an extremely characteristic and conserved design (another example is in Herrmann, E. Seltene Orientteppische IV, plate 23, 1981) and may represent the production of a single group of tribal weavers." (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 14) Condition Report: Pile overall fair - 1-2mm deep, ends taped on reverse, tuck in left hand border in upper left, approximately 40cm long. Some minor old moth damage in outer ivory floral guard on lower left edge
