A QASHQA'I 'STARS AND BARS' SINGLE BAG FACE, SOUTH PERSIA, LATE 19TH CENTURY “Lattice-design with diagonal rows of eight-pointed stars. The left and right edges to the main field have some small rosettes on a dark blue ground. The main border is formed of unidirectional arrows on an ivory ground. There are two guards with interlocking small boteh in a key-type pattern. The knotting is asymmetrical, open to left. Warps are in ivory undyed wool, wefts red with up to five shoots. The slit panels are in chevron-pattern twill with chequered guard panels in weft-float brocade on either side. Above the slit panels are three double rows of countered weft twining. The top end is folded over in plain weave and hemmed. The bottom end is rewoven in brown weft-faced kelim plain weave. Sides with single cord are original but re-overcast in brown wool. The back is missing.” (Benjamin, op.cit., LITERATURE: 3rd ed., 2004, pp. 92-93 “A well-known SW Persian design used in bags (eg Hali issue 24, page 448, 2003; image 75, Herrmann, E. Seltene Orientteppische IX, 1987) and rugs (image 146, Herrmann, E. Von Konya Bis Kokand, Seltene Orientteppische III, 1981). The matching light blue and red of the bars and main border makes this an attractive example.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 92)
