A QASHQA'I SMALL SINGLE BAG (CHANTEH), SOUTH PERSIA, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY “With a decorated back. The front has a horizontal zig-zag design in alternating red and ivory. The inner border is decorated with interlocking small boteh in a key pattern on a yellow ground. An outer guard to the main border is formed of reciprocal blue and red triangles. Knots are asymmetrical, open to the left, wefts red wool in two shoots, warps undyed brown wool. The slit panel of the closure area is formed of chevron-patterned twill. Adjacent guard rows are in a diamond and bar pattern, in weft-float brocading. Above the outer guard of the closure area are several rows of countered soumak in red and green. The reverse of the bag is mainly in red weft-faced plain weave but there are two polychromal stepped lozenges in slit tapestry weave. Simple linear and diamond-shaped patterns in weft brocading provide further decoration. The top and bottom of the back have single guard borders that are identical to those of the closure guards on the face of the bag. The single loop panel is formed by four rows of weft twining in red and green and the loops are plaited in wool of the same colours. Sides: single cords overcast in red.” (Benjamin, op.cit., LITERATURE: 3rd ed., 2004, pp. 80-81 “This is a complete and attractive bag in perfect condition. Zig-zag patterns are common in rugs of the Qashga’i tribe (eg plate 40, M. Eiland, Oriental Rugs from Pacific Collections, San Francisco Bay Area Rug Society, San Francisco, 1990).
