A QASHQA'I SMALL SINGLE BAG (CHANTEH), SOUTH PERSIA, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY “This piece is opened out and piled on each face. The front face has a single floral boteh on an ivory field with random small diamond, rosette and boteh fills. A floral and vine meander on a red ground forms the single border. The rear face has a modified flower lattice on an indigo ground. The border on the back is formed of small boteh arranged in an interlocking key pattern. Sides have a double cable overcast in dark brown or sometimes red. The pile has asymmetrical knots. The warps are in natural wool, the wefts are in purple silk with one or two shoots.” (Benjamin, op.cit., LITERATURE: 3rd ed., 2004, p. 76 “Although rather worn in places it is a pretty piece with no obvious closures present. The ‘runny’ reds could be Indian laq.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 76)
