A QASHQA'I 'BIRD-HEAD' SINGLE BAG FACE, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1880 “The field is divided into horizontal bands of 3 different designs: double-headed birds, diamond and serrated leaves and S shapes. The main border is the typical Qashga’i polychromal meander in its geometrical form on an ivory ground. Knots are asymmetrical in glossy wool, open to the left, warps are in natural ivory, wefts dyed red in two shoots. Slit panels are in weft-float brocading in the same diamond and leaf pattern found in the main field. Chequerboard bands in weft-faced brocading form guards to the slit panels (top row partly lost) and a single row of checkerboard is located at the bottom of the bag face. The back of the bag is missing.” (Benjamin, op.cit., LITERATURE: 3rd ed., 2004, pp. 94-95 “An attractive piece similar to the one published in Woven Gardens (ed. by Black, D. and Loveless, C., David Black Oriental Carpets, London, 1979, plate 29).” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 94)
