A LURI 'LARGE MEDALLION' SINGLE BAG, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1875 “This bag face has a hooked diamond medallion with a central endless-knot rosette on a red field. Typical Luri hooked/animal-head forms occur within the medallion and outside in the four corners of the dark-blue ground. A variety of animals, small rosettes and diamonds are fillers. The single border is formed of the usual geometrical meander on an ivory ground. Guards are formed of a reciprocal triangular two-colour pattern. Fragments of the slit panels in a diamond lattice design remain with a single guard woven in the same weft-float brocading technique. The ends together with the loop panel are missing. The knots are symmetrical with natural ivory coloured warps and wefts in brown wool in two shoots. The back of the bag has a striking band of soumak with a typical Luri animal-head pattern on a white cotton plain-weave ground (see James Opie, Tribal Rugs, chapter 5, Laurence King Publishing. 1992). The rest of the back is formed of bands of kelim in various colours. The brown bands are decorated with a continuous row of brocaded small flowers.” (Benjamin, op.cit., LITERATURE: 3rd ed., 2004, pp. 110-111 “A typical Fars design but this example with its looser weave and animal head features is a Luri piece rather than a Qashga’i.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p.110)
