A KHAMSEH 'TRI-MEDALLION' RUG, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1875 “The rug is dominated by three diamond-shaped medallions containing modified pomegranate and ‘maltese cross’ patterns. The medallions are surrounded by an indigo field that is filled with randomly- distributed crosses, rosettes, squares, hooked diamonds, animal and bird forms. Large and small latticed half-diamonds face inwards from the edges of the main field. Borders have boteh and halfbracketed diamond meanders. Ends are formed of multiple bands of kelim. Sides are overcast in two colours. The knots are asymmetrical, open to the left. The warps are in natural brown and cream wool plied together, wefts in red/brown dyed wool, two shoots.” (Benjamin, op.cit., LITERATURE: 3rd ed., 2004, pp. 40-41 “This is a brightly-coloured rug, perhaps of Arab tribal origin within the Khamseh. A number of similar rugs are known in the rug literature (eg Hali issue 36, page 104, 1987).” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 40)
