A KHAMSEH SMALL 'CHICKEN' BAG FACE, SOUTH PERSIA, LATE 19TH CENTURY “The main field contains randomly distributed chickens, three and four legged animals and trellis-patterned rectangles in various colours on a light blue ground. The main border is typically Khamseh with an alternating (red) flower and hour-glass (yellow) pattern on a light blue ground, sometimes reduced in clarity. Guards are in a banded design, with horizontal or vertical orientations. There are further piled areas at the top and bottom of the face with diagonal bands (top) and horizontal bands of interconnected weaving (bottom). The ends are decorated with weft twining with some plain weave beyond. The edges are overcast with some original blue and red plaiting or some simple banding in several colours. The knots are symmetrical, the warps in natural grey and brown, the wefts in red-dyed wool, two shoots.” (Benjamin, op.cit., LITERATURE: 3rd ed., 2004, pp. 108-109 “Probably part of a double bag (khorjin) . The chickens are a bit stunted but rather charming!” (Benjamin, op.cit., p.108)
