Lighting advice
Vintage lamps may have old wiring and plugs made for another country. For safety, have an electrician check and, if necessary, rewire older lamps before use, and confirm the bulb fitting (E14, E27 and so on) so you can buy suitable bulbs. Many modern pieces are fitted for LED bulbs.
Condition
"Good condition - used with small signs of ageing" covers light scratches, small marks on upholstery and patina on brass. "Fair condition" means heavier wear or small missing parts. Check the width, depth and height against the space you have in mind before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to use a vintage lamp straight away?
Not always. Lamps from the 1950s to the 1980s may have perished cable, old switches or a plug for a different country. It is sensible to have a qualified electrician inspect the wiring and replace the cable or plug where needed before regular use. Many older fittings accept modern LED bulbs, which run cooler and are gentler on old shades.
What is the difference between Antique and Antique inspired?
"Antique" describes a piece that is itself old, generally from before the 20th century or early in it. "Antique inspired" or a style name such as "Louis XVI style" describes a later piece made to look like an earlier period. Both can look good in a room; the era field in each listing tells you when the piece was actually made.
What is Hollywood Regency style?
Hollywood Regency is a decorative style from the 1930s to 1960s associated with glamorous film-star homes. It uses gilt and brass, mirrored surfaces, lacquer, velvet, bold colour and neoclassical details such as fluted legs and palm-leaf motifs. Gilded ceiling lamps, brass-framed side tables and velvet pouffes are typical pieces that suit the look.
