What is in this category
A broad mix of decorative objects: wall and table mirrors, carved wooden and resin figures, religious statues and crucifixes, bronze and cast-iron ornaments, garden benches and outdoor sculpture, desk and table lamps, vintage globes, coffee grinders, wine racks and seasonal decorations. How listings are described
- Era: 1900-2000 for most vintage pieces, After 2000 for newer decor, and 1400-1900 for the smaller number of true antiques.
- Style: Antique, Vintage, Art Deco, Art Nouveau or Contemporary.
- Material: wood, bronze, iron, brass, glass or resin, with width, depth and height in centimetres.
Condition
"As new - unused" and "Excellent condition" are common here because much of the decor is recent. "Good condition - used with small signs of ageing" covers light scratches, patina on metal and small chips on painted surfaces. Look closely at mirror glass, which can show silvering loss (dark spots) on older pieces.
Indoors or outdoors?
Bronze, cast iron and stone ornaments generally cope with weather; wood, resin, painted metal and plaster are safer indoors or under cover. For outdoor pieces, check the weight in the listing and plan a firm, level base. For wall mirrors and heavy decor, use fixings rated for the stated weight and your wall type.
Frequently asked questions
Can bronze and cast-iron garden ornaments stay outside all year?
Bronze weathers well outdoors and slowly develops a green or brown patina, which many people like. Cast iron is strong but will rust if its paint coat is damaged, so touch up chips and consider bringing it in or covering it in hard frosts. Resin, painted plaster and wood are best kept indoors or in a sheltered spot.
What causes dark spots on an old mirror?
Older mirrors were backed with a thin layer of silver (or earlier, tin and mercury). Over decades, moisture can reach the backing and the silvering flakes or oxidises, showing as dark or cloudy patches. This is normal ageing and many buyers value it as proof of age. Re-silvering is possible but changes the original character of the piece.
What is the difference between a figure, a statue and a sculpture in listings?
The words are used loosely. "Sculpture" usually refers to a work with an artist's name or artistic intent, "statue" to a standing figure, often religious or classical, and "figure" or "figurine" to a smaller decorative piece. The material, height and any maker's name in the listing tell you more about the object than the label itself.
