A silver-mounted tortoiseshell carriage clock by J. Batson & Son

No longer available

A silver-mounted tortoiseshell carriage clock by J. Batson & Son. Of typical rectangular form with openwork foliate scrollwork silver mounts, and encompassing a white dial with Roman numerals. All upon three (of four, one missing) compressed and threaded ball feet, a French movement to the inside, stamped 'I. F.', hinge hallmarked London 1895; height 11.8cm, width 7.5cm, depth 6.3cm approx. The tortoiseshell body has some damage: the middle-bottom of the front panel has a small section missing, about H3 x W22 mm. The top also has some damage to the left-hand side. Localised largely towards the back, a piece approximately H25 x W21 mm has come loose. Restoration appears to have been attempted at some point, with the damage now supported underneath with a piece of pinned metal, and brown paint added to disguise the damage; this has been mirrored on the right-hand side, although there does not appear to be any damage to that side. Additionally, the bottom back corners appear to have some kind of damage, largely disguised by the silver corners. Images have been added for assessment. One of the ball feet is missing. One other is undone from its mount but still present. The movement is not working at present. Perhaps being overwound, however, the escapement moves freely. We cannot guarantee the working order of any watch or clock and suggest that all timepieces are assessed by a professional following purchase.
