A late 19th or early 20th century Viking Revival dark-stained oak fireside or hall bench, the rectangular seat having an inset padded cushion upholstered in a coarse-weave blue fabric and secured by a border of brass-coloured upholstery tacks, the raised end panel featuring pierced and high-relief carving depicting interlaced serpents or dragons with stylized heads to the top corners, the slab-style supports similarly decorated with heavy scrollwork and Celtic-inspired knotwork, the rails and seat border further embellished with incised geometric patterns. The bench is constructed from solid oak boards and exhibits the Dragestil aesthetic typical of Scandinavian decorative arts from the period. There are no visible maker's marks, signatures, or manufacturer labels on the piece. Approx. 78 x 35cm
