A 20th century black lacquer Chinoiserie display cabinet, decorated throughout with shibayama style relief work. The upper section features a pair of large glass-fronted doors enclosing glass shelves, the interior panels reverse-painted with scenes of birds amongst blossoming cherry branches. The lower section comprises two frieze drawers over a two-door cupboard, the drawers and doors intricately inlaid with mother-of-pearl and carved hardstones depicting female figures in traditional dress within garden landscapes with architectural details and trees. The entire frame is heavily embellished with gilded fretwork, floral scrolls, and geometric borders. The sides of the cabinet are similarly decorated with figures and floral motifs. The piece is finished with ornate brass hardware, including swan-neck drawer pulls and decorative hinges and backplates. The interior glass shelves show some light surface wear.
